Solid oxide fuel cells convert fuel to electricity electrochemically rather than burning it. Natural gas is reformed at the anode, oxygen ions cross a ceramic electrolyte at roughly 700-850 C, and the reaction yields electricity, water and heat.
Commercial systems reach 51-61% net electrical efficiency on natural gas, beating a simple-cycle gas turbine, and exceed 90% total fuel efficiency once the high-grade heat is recovered and sold into district energy.
Because there is no flame, NOx is near-zero and noise is low, which is what allows generation to be permitted and sited in a populated area next to the heat customers. The same stacks run on hydrogen when supply exists, with no combustion hardware to replace.
