Battery energy storage, designed into the data centre

Data centres need battery storage for more than backup. In a GRECO campus, grid-scale BESS is a working part of the power architecture: it firms behind-the-meter generation, rides through grid events, shaves peaks against demand charges, and lets the facility respond to utility dispatch signals — shedding load in seconds when the grid calls.

We deploy two chemistries deliberately. Lithium-ion blocks deliver high power for ride-through and fast grid services; vanadium redox flow batteries add long-duration capacity with no cycle degradation, suited to daily charge-discharge against a data centre's load curve. Most vendors sell one or the other — a developer designing the whole campus can use each where it wins.

In British Columbia, storage is also how an AI data centre becomes a grid asset rather than a grid burden: BESS lets compute load flex against BC Hydro signals, which matters in a province allocating limited capacity through competitive processes.

GRECO's digital twin models the storage system alongside compute and cooling — state of charge, dispatch response and thermal behaviour are simulated before a single container is ordered.
